A Baby Blanket with Bells On
I work for a small company that makes a travel baby blanket for babies, I knew about this company long before I worked there and in fact I had actually bought one of their products several years before. It’s a great product and customers are always telling us how great it is and how much they love it, but it is very hard to get new customers to understand just how it works. Because we are an online retailer, we very rarely see our customers and they buy the product from a photo without actually seeing the product in real life. They mainly come to us because they have seen someone with one of our baby blankets in the street or a friend has one and through personal recommendations from friends and family. We have given up on most standard advertising in magazines and on websites because it just doesn’t work for us and we know that there are certain other things that work better.
One of the few times that we do get to see our customers is at baby shows. We spend hours and hours doing demos of our products in car seats and pushchairs. One of the most rewarding moments is when you are explaining how it works and you unwrap the baby blanket and they can see how the straps thread through. You can see a little light bulb going on and they normally say something like ‘oh right!’ You know they have suddenly got it. From that point on the sale is reasonably easy because the product sells itself, the customer can see how it works, its practicalities and how it will make their life easier. It is such a fantastic feeling to know that this person really understands how great the product is and realises that what you are saying is not just a sales pitch but it is actually true.
There are some customers who don’t quite understand why the product is a good idea, this is normally because they haven’t had their baby yet and don’t realise the difficulties you might have with a standard baby blanket. Sometimes they still buy it because they are with a grandparent or aunt that has had children and totally gets it. But if they don’t, these customers sometimes come back at a later date and buy online once they have had the baby and understand the benefits.
I have always had great belief in the product because I actually bought one when my daughter was younger, I found it totally brilliant, I had already had my child and was struggling with the baby blanket that I had. It is so easy to sell and be enthusiastic about a product you really believe in and even better when you constantly get great feedback from customers who feel the same.
Yes it is a baby blanket but it’s a baby blanket with bells on!
