A Trip to the Beach
This year we went on holiday in England near the coast and the children were desperate to go to the beach. The weather for the first week didn’t look too great, so one morning with a grey sky above we decided to risk it and hope that the sun broke through. We packed up our buckets, spades, swim suits and poncho towels and set off. We found a lovely beach which was quiet and had none of the usual beach front shops and chaos.
I found an area to lay our poncho towels, clothes and shoes and set us up on the beach, the kids went down to the water and started to dig and play. We recommended not going swimming as it was cold and windy within half an hour it started to rain, I couldn’t believe it; the kids were protesting that they didn’t mind, but it was just too cold. So with the promise of returning soon, we packed up and headed to the local pool as a consolation.
The following week the weather had improved so we set off again but to a different town with the intention of having a look round and going to the beach as well. The weather was much better, although every so often it turned grey and overcast with a cold wind. The kids were adamant they wanted their swim suits and poncho towels, so we walked into town for lunch and then headed down to the beach.
It was fairly busy but not crowded, I found a spot for our stuff and the children immediately insisted on getting changed, within 10 minutes they had jumped into the sea and were swimming. I happily discovered that we were between the lifeguard flags with 2 lifeguards sat on the roof looking out.
I couldn’t believe it, but the kids swam in the sea for about an hour and absolutely loved it. As soon as they got out of the water the cool breeze froze them and I got them straight into their poncho towels. However they weren’t ready to get dressed so they played for another hour on the beach. Even though they were wet their towels kept them warm and because they were poncho style they kept they heads and arms warm and fastened at the front so they didn’t fall off.
Before we left we walked along the beach with the kids still in their poncho towels, we looked at the sandcastles that people had built and things that people had written in the sand. My daughter found a crab shell which she was delighted with.
We had a great afternoon at the beach and swimming in the sea, I am sure the children will always remember that day. It was worth persisting despite the inclement weather and of course if you are in the sea the rain can’t make you any weather.
