Choosing a Kids Coat
Choosing a kids coat it not as easy as you think, most people choose colours and styles that appeal to them when their children are babies. When your children reach school age and you are looking for a more practical option you really need to think a bit more about what you want. A t this age clothing tends to last a bit longer and they can often get a year from an item of clothing before they grow out of it.
My children have never been keen to wear coats even when the weather is freezing; I think this is for a number of reasons. Firstly they want be to be able to move about easily and not be constricted by bulky thick fabrics. Secondly because they are always running about, they don’t feel the cold and can get hot and sweaty in their coat, they feel that they don’t need one. Lastly they don’t want the hassle of getting dressed up in coats, gloves and hats every time they are going somewhere, they just want to go!
After many years of trying various types of kid’s coats, I found that if the weather isn’t too cold it is sometimes easier to give them a lightweight raincoat that just give them a bit of protection from wind and keeps them dry in the rain. If it gets really cold, I found that some warm but lightweight coats that are also waterproof are great. They keep them warm but aren’t too thick so they can still move about easily.
Fasten a kids coat can also be a real issue, both children and parents alike prefer it to be really easy to fasten so there is no messing about. Sometimes it is an advantage if the child can do it up themselves, so they can be involved, but this can also mean they are able to take it off which you may not want. I recently discovered a kid’s coat that does up using one button on the shoulder. It is really easy to fasten without them really noticing and the child will not be able to reach to undo it which can be a great help for a parent, when you are trying to keep their coat on.
I think if you do your research and find the right kids coat it is sometimes worth spending money on a good quality one that you know will last and maybe is more breathable so they don’t get too hot in it. Ski jackets can often be a good choice because they tend to be really warm but are not too bulky. If you get a neutral colour it can be passed on from child to child and get good use out of it over many years. Of course if it is in good condition you can resell it when you have finished using it on one of the auction sites.
