Preparing for a New Baby

When I was planning for the arrival of my first baby, my first thought was what do I need for a new baby the first purchase that came to mind was a pram.  I had experience of using buggies and prams and I knew that buying an expensive travel system would be a mistake because after the baby is a year old most people replace their pram with a cheap lightweight buggy which is easy to put up and put in and out of the car.  I was also keen to have a separate car seat from the pram, so my baby could lay flat.

The second thing I thought of when I was deciding what do I need for a new baby was a cot and Moses basket.  I was very fortunate to be offered a lovely wooden cot bed by some family friends.  It was suitable as a cot to start with and then changes into a bed when the child is older.

My sister in law offered me her Moses basket for the baby when it was first born, so I was very lucky and didn’t have to spend money on lots of the big items.

After these main items had been purchased it was just little bits and bobs, I did buy a few clothes bit I was also offered a few clothes second had.  It was a mistake to get any clothes because when the baby was born I was absolutely overrun with gifts of clothes.

When you are thinking what do I need for a new baby, its good idea not to get too carried away. It’s easy to spend lots of money on things that you may never use or need.  You will also feel that your house is overrun with baby stuff, it may be exciting at first, but soon you will be craving some space back.

If people ask you for gift ideas, you may again think what do I need for a new baby.  You should ask for things you might need, haven’t already got and things that you don’t want to choose yourself.  It may be worth having a list of things that you would like, but are not essential items if you don’t get them.

Anything you buy yourself should be planned and researched before purchasing so you know you are getting the right equipment and buying it for a good price. When you start thinking what do I need for a new baby, it is wise to write an essential list and then an extra list for the non essentials, you can then tick things off when you have got them.  Set a budget for each item based on some research so you have an idea of what it will cost individually and all the items together, you can also look for second hand items to save money.
