Stuff for New Babies

There are so many things to think about when you are having a baby and one of them is thinking about what do I need for a new baby.  It can be quite over whelming but there are many things that you don’t need to worry about to start with.  The main things you need to get are clothing, nappies (either disposable or cloth) a pram, car seat and a cot for them to sleep in and bedding. 

Many other items are nice to have but not essential like bouncy chairs, baby carriers.  You need to decide if you are going to breast feed or bottle feed because with bottle feeding you need to get bottles and sterilizing equipment.  When you are deciding what do I need for a new baby a great way to get a list of essentials is to look online at lists, many of the baby websites particularly forums have lists of  things the baby will need with a list of optional items.  You can also find lists for things you need to pack for hospital and also a list of things mums need like breast pads and paper knickers.

The other thing to think about when you are making your plans about what do I need for a new baby, is that often family will want to buy something for the baby.  So if you have a list of essentials you could ask them to buy one of those or pick something off the extras list.  This helps to spread the cost and the family feel like they are getting something that you really need and will be useful.

If money is tight and you need to find equipment at a lower cost you can look on online auction sites you can quite often get fantastic products in fabulous condition for a very low price.  You can also look at charity shops and nearly new sales, the National Childbirth Trust have sales regularly with really great, nearly new baby stuff.  If you have friends who have had babies in the last couple of years most will offer to give you or lend equipment.  They are normally happy to get stuff out of their house as soon as they are no longer using it.

I have often thought when you are deciding what do I need for a new baby, to buy the absolute essentials that you need for when the baby is born.  Then don’t buy anything else until you have got home and you actually know what you need or will find useful.  People live their lives so many different ways and what one person thinks is essential another may never use.  You can always research products in advance and then if you think you are going to need them you can get them, if not you can cross them off the list.  That way you know the answer to what do I need for a new baby?
